Home Decluttering Tips
Decluttering is a way to refresh your home without spending a dime. In fact, you could be helping families in need or making a profit on things you may no longer need or want.
Materials: Garbage bags, empty boxes for sorting items, pen and paper to catalogue items to sell
1. Label boxes for sorting items: Keep, Toss, Donate, Sell
2. Start decluttering by room. If children are old enough, get them involved with their own boxes and garbage bags for the “toss” box items.
3. Items that are designated good enough to sell, catalogue and price accordingly for a future garage sale (online or at home).
4. Items that are designated good enough to donate, organize contents by type. Clothing, shoes, accessories, toys, electronics, furniture, kitchenware, utensils, etc. Check with your local charity for drop off times and days. For larger items, check if the charity will pick them up. Furniture and home improvement related items could be donated to Habitat for Humanity’s Restore. Check the web for locations and donation options.
5. Items to toss, place in garbage bags and sort based on your local recycling and waste disposal rules.
6. Items to keep, reorganize in each room and if possible, re-purpose for other uses as well.
7. If not all items can be sold or donated due to restrictions or interest, get together a swap meet up with friends or family to exchange for items you might need.
